Abstract
Improving the computational efficiency of image processing tasks has become a dominant issue with the ultimate goal of real-time processing. One solution to improve efficiency is the use of a hexagonal image representation and we present an approach to feature extraction on hexagonal images using an edge map pyramid approach that further reduces the computational cost. The efficient performance of this approach is demonstrated by comparing run-times for obtaining edge maps by applying multi-scale operators directly to hexagonal images with the edge map pyramid approach.
