Abstract
This talk will review my sociological transgender research since 1968. It will start with my first meeting with 'female impersonator' Johnny Brown at the Club My-O-My, New Orleans in 1968, and review my research project on transgendering which began in the UK in 1979. It will focus on the way in which the varied interrelations between trans people and others - sexologists, mental health professionals, and so on - construct the possibilities for alternative formulations, identities, and social worldsof transgendering, in different times and places.
