Abstract
The purpose of this study was to synthesise information on the technical components and contributing body parts in straight punches in boxing in a variety of contexts. Currently, there is a dearth of evidence on the technical components of straight punches, especially from the perspective of amateur boxing coaches. Therefore, seven Irish amateur boxing coaches participated in semi-structured interviews on the technical components of straight punches. Thematic analysis was used to interpret interview data and derive themes. Irish amateur boxing coaches perceived that punching is a whole-body movement. Coaches described motions at the ankles, knees, hips, shoulders and arms travelling from the ground up. Themes developed include stepping in with the jab, types of jab, rear cross rotation, punch range of motion, balance and whole body movement. Irish boxing coaches identified some of the nuances associated with different fighting styles, contexts during combat and coaching philosophies. This information can help to expand boxing coaches’ and athletes’ knowledge of the technical components of straight punches, as well as changes that may occur during specific circumstances. Boxing coaches, athletes and strength and conditioning coaches can use this information to guide training and improve performance in amateur boxing.
