Evaluation of Optometry students’ perceptions of hospital placements before and after feedback from ophthalmologists

Abstract

It is common practice for training for health care professionals to involve clinical placements as part of the learning experience. However, there are limited data evaluating the effectiveness of hospital placements for Optometry undergraduate students. The present study aims to investigate students’ perceptions of hospital based learning before and after group feedback from ophthalmologists. Questionnaires were issued to 25 final year Optometry students to assess their perceptions of hospital based placements. These were issued at the end of semester one after attending two clinical sessions and again at the end of semester two following group feedback from ophthalmologists on the students’ performance and a further two placement sessions. Analyses demonstrated that students felt significantly more prepared for their hospital placements after receiving feedback from the ophthalmologists. In general, the results suggested that the students perceived the hospital placements to be beneficial, engaging and increased their knowledge of ocular disease.
