Abstract
Whilst my work is primarily concerned with image making through photographic means, my research also investigates how my photographs occupy the gallery space and how the environment surrounding the image informs how it is viewed and experienced. To this end my practice moves beyond traditional understandings of photography, to incorporate installation to create physically and conceptually expansive spaces within which to view photographs.
The installations I devise are made in response to elements that are present in my photographic images. The installation, 'Entering that Other Scene that Grows out of the Roots of this One', although primarily created to sit in direct relationship with the photograph, 'Gradually Unhappening', was also intended to be experienced as a vast curtain structure, dwarfing the viewer.
This installation was positioned in opposition to the photographic work, 'Gradually Unhappening' (PURE ID: 132875579), the large-scale curtain structure fabricated to mirror the colour and composition of the image. Standing before the photograph a duality emerges between these oppositional spaces, both in real terms and within the space depicted in the image. The mutability of these interchangeable states, between the physical space we stand in and that which we view in the photograph, is emphasised by the ‘V’ curtains, which envelop the viewer and echo the black walls depicted in the photographic image.
'Entering that Other Scene that Grows out of the Roots of this One’ formed part of the solo exhibition, 'Places We think We Know', at Dundee Contemporary Arts in 2021.
