Abstract

Commissioned for the 2007 Cheltenham Festival, Duplex consists of two compact, interlocking movements of similar dimensions which can be played in either order. The title, has connotations with architecture, reflected in the way the movements form two ’levels’ of the same construct. The title also refers to a computing term for a circuit which allows the simultaneous transimission of two signals in opposite directions. In a similar way, each movement ’handles’ two threads of material which develop in opposition to one another. The significance of each movement’s material depends on the order in which they are both heard.
