Abstract
This presentation explores how Graphic Medicine and illustration can bridge lived experience, health research and policy. Drawing on a project developed through Ulster University’s EPSRC Place Based Impact Acceleration Account, it examines health inequalities in Belfast through community engagement and visual storytelling.
Working with community organisations, service users, healthcare professionals and policymakers, lived experiences of deprivation, waiting, addiction, imprisonment and unequal healthcare informed a series of paintings and zines. The presentation considers how illustrators can move beyond simply visualising research findings to become active participants in engagement- humanising data, amplifying underrepresented voices and encouraging more meaningful conversations around the development of future healthcare technologies.
