DIGITAL SKILLS FOR THERAPY RADIOGRAPHERS (TR) - A DOCUMENT ANALYSIS

Introduction: Therapy radiographers (TR) have a key role in health care provision. They are also facing new challenges in terms of digital skills, for which continuous training is required. These needs come largely from the diversity of software used by TRs, such as treatment planning, delivery systems and imaging assessment software, all of which are constantly changing. Despite all this, a common regulation for TR across the EU countries does not exist, leading to skills differences required for the qualification and practice across member states. The aim was to assess the literature and identify the relevant digital skills for TRs to perform their duties. Methodology: A document analysis was performed to identify the digital skills in the TR profile, as well as the skills that may be required in the future due to the technological demand. Results: A comprehensive list of digital skills that must be included in the training and education of European radiographers has been collated. This data can be used to avoid gaps in knowledge or a mismatch of skills across the EU (e.g. contouring, dose calculation and image analysis skills). This set of digital skills will also allow for the anticipation of future needs, regarding the quick development of new technologies (such as machine learning and cybersecurity). Discussion: It is imperative to ensure that the TRs are trained with the necessary skills to adopt the best practice across Europe. Closing the gaps in the skill set of radiographers will thus improve the quality of practice which will result in better patient outcomes.
