Developing knowledge and skills in risk assessment, simulation, applied drama, video documentation in nurse education

Abstract

The Safe and Effective Nurse and the Safe and Effective Mental Health Nurse are year 3 semester 1 modules delivered to the BSc(Hons) Nursing (Adult and Mental Health) pre-registration students (n=210). This presentation will outline how a problem based learning (PBL) approach is used within this skills based module to develop student's knowledge and skills in risk management. A combination of simulation and applied drama techniques is used. Students are allocated to right different scenarios designed around real life clinical problems that occur in the workplace. In their PBL groups, students apply decision-making and leadership skills to manage the risks presented din the scenario. Video recordings of the scenarios are uploaded to Sharestream within Blackboard Learn. Both PBL groups and the actors (students acting as patients and/or family members) play back the videos, reflecting on the overall management of risk. The experience improves confidence in risk assessment and management and helps the nursing students gain insights into the user experience. This presentation examines the rationale, processes and experiences of staff and students and how this approach can enhance employability in future registered nurses.
