Abstract
We have established parameters that enable the prediction of C-13 NMR chemical shifts for carbons beta and gamma to a sulfoxide or sulfone oxygen(s). Carbons beta were found to be moved upfield by similar to 21 ppm and those gamma downfield by similar to 7.7 ppm in chloroform. We tested these parameters by sequentially oxidizing poly(butyl thirane) to its corresponding polysulfone and assigned the new peaks observed in the C-13 NMR on the basis of their proximity to the oxygen atom(s).
