Detection of obstructions in venous blood flow

Abstract

Following any surgical procedure on an anaesthetised patient there is a significant risk of a blood clot forming within the venous system. This is known as a 'Deep Venous Thrombosis' D.V.T. If part of this clot breaks free (to form an embolus) it can lodge in a major lung vessel with potentially lethal consequences. It is now realised that the clinical detection of these clots is very unreliable and a simple non-invasive method of detection would be of great value. The present methods of diagnosis include venography, which is very reliable: but traumatic for the patient. Impedance Plethysmography, although non-invasive
is not as reliable.

This presentation reviews current methods of detection and identifies the requirements for a method based on reliability, accuracy and simplicity for routine use.

We have developed a system, which we envisage will meet these specifications. The benefits of this device will be discussed and results compared with those of conventional methods.
