Abstract

Sustainability is a priority for industries across the board, from measuring and certifying environmental and carbon credentials, to moving to net zero, to working ethically with suppliers and customers, and much more. This will require graduates equipped with an understanding of the UN Sustainable Development Goals, who have developed personal and professional abilities across the eight Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) competencies, and overall hold sustainability at the core of their professional and personal practice.

This workshop is based on the facilitators’ experience designing a new food industry module for undergraduates, based on ESD principles, that was co-created with academics from different disciplines, current and former students, employers, and industry professionals. The facilitators also graduated from the UNESCO Bootcamp on Learning Design and ESD 2022.

Participants will complete the workshop with a working understanding of ESD and its core competencies such as futures-thinking and systems-thinking. They will develop a deeper understanding of how to engage learners through co-creation and partnership, transformative pedagogy, active learning, and authentic assessment. We encourage participants to bring an existing module, or one currently in development, to be worked on.
