Abstract
The velocity field of present deformation in Central Asia is modelled with four rotating blocks (Siberia, Tarim, Tibet, India) on a spherical earth. A best-fitting model is inverted from estimated shortening- and slip-rates on the main thrust (Himalayas, Tien Shan) and strike-slip zones (Altyn Tagh, Karakorum) between those blocks. The good fit of the data implies that most of the present convergence between India and Asia is absorbed by motion on these four zones. Localised deformation thus governs the mechanical behaviour of the Central Asian lithosphere. There is an abridged Engish version. -English summary
