BREATHE

I was commissioned to create a digital artwork using the MURAL platform as part of ‘Web Monetization and the Arts’ project. The final digital artwork was comprised of visual, physical and sound elements that were created, collected and compiled over a two-day period. Northern Ireland’s north coast, the sea and its inhabitants provided all the elements.
Small scale physical artworks were created from materials gathered and are documented in the final artwork. In addition a range of open source programmes were tested to manipulate and animate images and soundtracks. This project involved the use of Coil and its cryptocurrency called XRP. As opposed to currencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum, Coil uses XRP, which uses a system called ‘proof of stake’ for preparing its blockchain. This is a system that has considerably better environmental implications than Ethereum, the main blockchain used when creating NFTs, because it uses far less computing resources. The final artefact I created was used to test how the platform could be used and how the process could be utilised as an income generator for artists/creatives online.
