Abstract

The proposal for Belfast Seahorse won a highly competitive international competition for public sculpture in Belfast, UK. The submission was blind peer-reviewed in a rigorous process that attracted 96 entries from international artists.Research connected with my transformation projects, especially Lady Bird Transformation enabled me to realize a sculpture of this size and quality. The research for the commission proposal involved also a profound inquiry into the history of the Belfast region and ancient myth and legends. I found out that a cult around a mythical character exists in North European countries. The shape shifting character of the Belfast Seahorse was designed according to this knowledge. The competition budget was 100.000,00 GBP. I won the competition in 2010 but the erection of the sculpture in Belfast Harbour will happen in August 2013.
