Abstract
Augmented reality (AR) technology is being recognized as a valuable tool in the educational landscape, particularly in engineering. Despite the predominance of two-dimensional media in educational contexts, AR technology offers a unique opportunity to enhance the learning experience by integrating physical and virtual environments. This study explores the transformative potential of Augmented Reality (AR) as an innovative tool in engineering education through a systematic review of 85 peer-reviewed studies investigating AR's role within educational frameworks, specifically emphasising engineering education. Analysis was made to identify key themes, existing barriers, and gaps in current research and propose future directions for integrating AR into engineering curricula. This study highlights the significance of promoting AR as a transformative educational tool to enhance future educational results and quality. The findings suggest that augmented reality has the potential to revolutionize education by increasing accessibility and engagement for people from a variety of backgrounds.
