Abstract

A sculpture of “The Atmosphere” has not been made before. A number of artists attempted to make clouds or to make diorama like works that show atmospheric phenomena in landscapes. In a broader sense, climate is the state of the components of the climate system, including the atmosphere, hydrosphere, cryosphere, lithosphere and biosphere and the interactions between them. The sculpture evokes the experimental cinema of the early twentieth century: colors and shapes appear, develop, and vanish in a slow continuum with the change of the viewer`s observational position. The artwork’s silent, slowly shifting atmosphere suggests a view from outer space if looked at from a higher position. Seen from a lower viewpoint it is possible to discover the three dimensionality of the clouds and a change in the atmosphere`s color comparable to sunrise and sunset.
Inspired by John Tyndall who founded the science of light scatter and explained series the colour of the sky in different light situations among many other achievements. The knowledge about the nature of nature has never been as important as it is today as human influence altered the natural world significantly. The sculpture combines different artistic methods to make a three-dimensional model of the earth atmosphere that enables visitors to experience and understand the Tyndall effect and to link it at the same time to the greenhouse effect.
This body of work is based on three interrelated considerations and observations. Interestingly both terms my artworks are based on are ambivalent in common language. An atmosphere (from Ancient Greek (atmós) 'vapour, steam', and σ (sphaîra) 'sphere') is a layer of gas or layers of gases that envelop a planet and is held in place by the gravity of the planetary body.
Making a sculpture of the atmosphere seems impossible using traditional methods of 3d visual arts. One of the most important subjects of current public and scientific discourse is the earth climate.
