Abstract
Obesity and mental health are intertwined public health challenges that impair physical, social, and mental well-being. Digital technologies offer promising avenues for enhancing communication between health professionals (HPs) and individuals living with obesity and mental health issues (Figure 1), but its role remains unclear.
A rigorous scoping review (2013-2023) applying Arksey & O’Malley’s (2005) methodology was conducted with eight databases. The guiding review question was “What are the uses, benefits, and limitations of digital technology in supporting communication between HPs and persons living with obesity and mental health issues?” PRISMA diagram was conducted.
In total, 8 studies were selected, which showed a range of digital technologies to facilitate care for individuals with obesity and mental health comorbidities.
Findings reveal key research themes integrating biopsychosocial constructs in digital health communication for obesity and mental health. This table highlights the benefits, such as personalised digital CBT and reduced stigma, and challenges, including engagement barriers and the need for multidisciplinary collaboration. The research found weight loss success but no mental health benefits.
This review highlights the role of digital technologies in improving communication between HPs and individuals facing obesity and mental health challenges. While digital tools have successfully enhanced obesity management, there remains a gap in mental health support. The findings advocate for innovative, tailored digital solutions, clearer roles for HPs, and strategies to overcome weight stigma, calling for an interdisciplinary approach to meet the complex needs of this population.
