Abstract

In the last 30 years Architectural Technology has emerged as a discipline in its own right, and its recognition has grown in the UK and internationally. However, many false perceptions exist concerning what Architectural Technology is and what Architectural Technologists do. Architectural Technology therefore needs to be clearly profiled and defined while considering these false perceptions. By gaining a clearer understanding of the problems then the discipline can be more effectively promoted. This presentation investigates three strands relating to Architectural Technology in the UK context: what Architectural Technology is, how it is perceived, and what we can learn to help promote the discipline in the UK and internationally. The material considered is gathered from three sources:• Firstly, targeted questionnaires facilitated by the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT) and circulated to CIAT registered practices and CIAT Accredited Course Leaders• Secondly, information derived from a Symposium entitled Architectural Technology: Raising the Profile• Thirdly, structured interviews with Architectural Technology practitioners and educators in the UKThrough analysis of the data collected, Architectural Technology is profiled and defined within the broader contexts of Architecture and Construction. False perceptions about Architectural Technology are examined with recommendations how they may be combated. There is a particular consideration of Education, Research and Practice relating to Architectural Technology. A model is presented identifying links between Education, Research and Practice in Architectural Technology and it is proposed that enhancements to these links will provide opportunities to strengthen the discipline. The presentation concludes by looking forward to the next 30 years for the discipline, highlighting the importance of growing and promoting Architectural Technology internationally. This presentation shares ideas to inspire a shared vision for the future of Architectural Technology by building the brand consistently and raising the profile globally.
