Abstract

Cancer is a severe and potentially life-threatening disease and a major cause of death in most countries. Advanced drug delivery systems offer enormous opportunities to improve the therapeutic effectiveness of cancer therapy. Microparticles offer versatile advantages as drug delivery systems due to its potential to entrap a wide range of anticancer drugs, protection of the encapsulated drug against degradation, and time-controlled release of incorporated drug. This chapter will discuss advances in the field of microparticles-mediated cancer treatment including materials used for the preparation of microparticles, along with a discussion on different types of microparticles and a detailed discussion on microparticles that have already been used for the treatment or diagnosis of cancer.
