Abstract
This paper presents a review of the field of behavioural animation. It gives an introduction to the area and then proceeds to detail the various approaches used. These approaches include the perception, behavioural and movement techniques used to model the animated characters that interact autonomously within a virtual world. Each approach is detailed within a classification in which the techniques adopted by various authors are compared and contrasted. It concludes by proposing a behavioural animation framework that is a general structure by which all behavioural animation systems can be modelled and suggests there is a need for a truly generic behavioural animation system in which all classes of behaviour can be modelled.
