A Qualitative Exploratory Study of Experiences and Training Needs Among Hospice Staff Delivering Oral Care in a Specialist Palliative Care Unit

Background: Oral care is vital to overall health but is often overlooked in Palliative Care impacting on patients' physical and psychological well-being.
Aims: To explore experiences, knowledge and training needs of Registered Nurses and Healthcare Assistants delivering oral care within a palliative care unit.
Methods: A qualitative exploratory research design was used. Participants included Registered Nurses and Healthcare Assistants. Data was collected using face-to-face semi-structured interviews.
Findings: A total of 16 participants (8 Registered Nurses and 8 Healthcare Assistants) participated. Inductive thematic analysis identified three themes (1) lack of education; (2) performing oral care; (3) barriers to oral care delivery. Staff reported inadequate training, misconceptions and limited resources, resulting in opportunistic care. Oral care champions and inclusion of oral care in policy were highlighted.
Conclusion: Oral care education should be implemented within hospice settings for staff. Addressing gaps in education, clear guidelines and prioritising oral care in hospice settings are essential to enhance patient outcomes.
