Abstract

Líon na Bearnaí ' / ' Fill the Gaps' is a piece of work derived from an earlier piece called ‘Parliament na mBán. a temporary piece made in 1999, located on the exterior wall of the Irish language cultural centre Cultúrlann McAdam Ó Fiaich. It centered on a hand written book of the same name. The book, a transcript written originally in 1670 by Domhnal O' Comlmain was transcribed in 1882 by Éamoin UÍ Mhathghamhna. The book describes a hypothetical parliament of women providing detail on protocol and legislation. I reproduced a line of text from the book concerning the education of women and their possible role in military affairs, which seemed both archaic and current in the late 1990s in lead letters made of salvaged piping on the wall of the Cúlturlann. The book was also exhibited to publicise its'. This tactic was successful as Annraoi Ó Préith an Irish scholar borrowed it to conduct research into it content and the scribe who made it. Ó Préith has since died and the whereabouts of the book is unknown. I had a receipt from O’ Preith for the book but this is since lost The wall piece has since been removed in the Cultúrlann’s refurbishment. I still have two emails from Ó Préith regarding his findings on the book. These emails provide the starting point of ' Líon na Bearnaí ' / ' Fill the Gaps' as I attempt to trace the book and more importantly Ó Préith’s findings through his friends and acquaintances. The work takes the form of an animation made from surviving documentation of the text on the Cultúrlann’s wall and documentation of correspondence, which attempt to trace the book and unearth Ó Préith’s research. Ultimately ' Líon na Bearnaí ' is about the difficulty of asking questions, language, interpretation, loss, speculation and communication. Should I ever trace the book I intend to donate it to a public library.
