Abstract
Professor Éamonn Ó Tuathail visited the Muintir Luinigh and Tearmann Mhig Uirc districts of Tyrone on several occasions between 1929 and 1932. Most of the stories in Irish that he collected during those visits were published in his famous Sgéalta Mhuintir Luinigh in 1933. He also included a small number of folktales that had been collected by Father Conn Mhac an Ghirr in Tearmann Mhig Uirc in the early 1900s.
Three Stories from the Mid-Tyrone Gaeltacht is a selection of three of the best folktales from Sgéalta Mhuintir Luinigh. It presents them as found in Ó Tuathail’s original 1933 edition together with a parallel revised edition that uses for its spelling system a version of An Caighdeán Oifigiúil (The Official Standard).
The editor has made these tales accessible to the contemporary reader while remaining true to the voices of the Tyrone Irish speakers who recounted them. An English language introduction provides the general reader with an insight into the lost world from which these folktales emerged, while the textual notes explain features of the language in which they were told.
