Description

There is ongoing controversy as to the grammaticality of questions like (1), where 'she' refers to 'Beth': (1) Which picture of Beth did she frame? Such coreference is uncontroversially bad in in the corresponding statement (2) that would answer (1): (2) She framed this picture of Beth. We propose an experiment that aims to settle this empirical debate, which has major consequences for linguistic theory. We hypothesise that focus on the pronoun plays a crucial role, with .
