Sport-Environment Determinants of Gambling Initiation and Escalation: A Systematic Review

Project: Research

Project Details

Description

Background
In the UK, over 11 million people participate in organised sport, which offers benefits but also risks like gambling through sponsorships, peer pressure, and traditions like betting pools, normalising gambling from a young age. Athletes face higher gambling risks than the general public. Despite this, understanding sport-specific factors influencing harmful gambling is limited, hindering regulation and risking ongoing harm to athletes, coaches, officials, and managers. Policymakers need trustworthy information to create safe sporting environments. Research lacks insight into the long-term effects of gambling on young athletes and how early exposure influences future betting habits. Most studies focus on elite athletes, excluding coaches and officials who shape club culture and social norms. Synthesising this research could inform better policies in sports organisations globally.
