Concussion is an issue in many contact sports. In order to guide player protection strategies in rugby league, we first must uncover the biomechanical mechanism of concussion. This PhD project aims to understand this through combining video footage, computational modelling, GPS and instrumented mouthguard (iMG) data from professional players. iMGs are equipped with accelerometers and gyroscopes to measure the linear and rotational kinematics during head impact and acceleration events. The candidate will be based at Hull KR rugby league club. Thus, this PhD provides a unique opportunity for a PhD researcher to gain experience in both academia and elite-level sport. The candidate should have an undergraduate degree (2:1 or higher) in either sports science, engineering, physiotherapy, medicine, computer science, physics, data science/analytics or similar. Experience working in elite-level sport or problem-solving environments will be of benefit. Ability to work independently and as a team is essential. The PhD will last three years. Fees will be covered and an annual stipend of £15,500 (tax-free) will be provided to the successful candidate. Certain graduates (e.g., physiotherapist) may have the opportunity to gain additional income through other club roles.
