IAA - Driving language awareness and English improvement in Northern Ireland primary and post-primary education

Project: Research

Project Details

Description

This project brings together two previous strands of impact: one concerning newcomer pupils and one concerning language teaching in post primary schools. It plans to do two things: 1. Assist post-primary pupils in language learning to address the de facto crisis of languages in NI, by engaging post-primary schools in a review of Language Awareness for Key Stage 3 - LAwKS-3, a suite of language resources to promote second language teaching. The project will deliver new videos of the existing resources. 2. Guide schools to assess the language needs of newcomer pupils, and support their development of English by engaging with primary schools to understand the challenges they face and provide them with tools to support this task.
