Project Details
Description
Artemis Technologies recently demonstrated huge advancements in whole-ship efficiency delivered by the Artemis-eFoiler solution with its 11.5m 100% electric hydrofoiling workboat and this demonstration was bolstered by the Round 1 CMDC feasibility study of a 24m Crew Transfer Vessel (CTV) for offshore wind operation. This Round 2 demonstration will build on the success of the Artemis-eFoiler solution by increasing its market reach, whilst also generating further innovation and IP in UK, which can be directly applied to a much wider market in the new-build and re-fit segments.
Artemis will implement an integration and marinisation strategy for a compact, high power density fuel cell range-extending propulsion system for small to mid-size vessels, where volumetric constraints pose specific technical challenges which have not yet been overcome in commercially available maritime fuel cell solutions.
Artemis will demonstrate a control architecture which manages a 'Hydrogen Hybrid', consisting of a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) and a range extending Fuel Cell system, optimising power split for maximised energy efficiency and range, whilst fulfilling a wide range of mission profiles. The architecture will maintain supervisory control of safety risks arising from on-board Hydrogen storage, BESS and the installation of a modular, Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) fuel cell.
This work will be supported by project partners, Lloyd's Register, HySafer (Ulster University) and Energia Hydrogen. Lloyd's will offer a holistic system wide review of the safety concept and Artemis' marinisation package with a view to aligning with IMO and Lloyd's guidelines for the installation of hydrogen storage and fuel cell systems. HySafer will manufacture and test novel hydrogen storage tanks which offer an innovative and industry leading solution to mitigating the risks associated with Thermally Activated Pressure Relief Device (TPRD), whilst Energia Hydrogen will support with the supply of green Hydrogen and provide a report on novel, low CAPEX infrastructure for hydrogen bunkering and fuelling options for vessels.
