Acmhainn Dhigiteach Gaeilge Uladh: Digitiú agus Foilsiú ar Líne Bailiúchán Uí hUallacháin

The project aims to digitise and make available to members of the general public a corpus of Irish language on the basis of the collection of tapes representing samples of local dialects from the North of Ireland, collected by the late Colmán Ó hUallacháin in the 1970s. The resource will feature a database where the information is going to be collected taking a number of categories into consideration such as location; informants; gender; professional groups; age. The data will be subdivided into smaller segments so that to reveal its grammar and lexis: key grammatical structures and key words will be highlighted and linked to be used by students at different levels of language acquisition. Our aims are: (1) to take the stock of tape recordings by Colmán Ó hUallacháin (12 in total x 60 minutes each) (2) to digitise the audio files into mp3 format (3) to transcribe the audio files into Modern Irish according to the modern day standard of the language (4) to create a website that will feature Ó hUallacháin's collection (5) to up-load transcriptions and audio files to the website (6) to mark-up the data according to various grammatical and lexical categories so that (7) to create a resource for learning Irish for students at different levels. The number of digital resources geared towards learners of the Irish language based on the original dialectal data from the North of Ireland is scarce and the project will ameliorate this. More so, it will unlock the potential of the recordings collected from the last speakers of Irish in the North currently kept in the archives of the Folk Museum (NMNI) in Cultra for the wider audiences
