Biography

Bill graduated from Edinburgh Napier University with a BSc Hons (2:1) in Science with Management Studies and an MSc in Food Science & Microbiology from the University of Strathclyde.  His Molecular Microbiology PhD at Ulster University (supervised by Prof James Dooley) examined the epidemiology & survival of the foodborne pathogen Campylobacter.

As a Postdoc (Prof Paul O’Toole: supervisor) at University College Cork, Bill discovered that HorB (HP0127) is a gastric epithelial cell adhesion in Helicobacter pylori.  He then returned to Ulster University as a Postdoc (Prof James Dooley: supervisor) and applied molecular methods to improve understanding of major human pathogens (Cryptosporidium, Campylobacter & Helicobacter).  He initiated productive collaborations with world leading research organisations including Health Canada, the USDA & the Istituto Superiore di Sanità.  Bill coordinated the first major Cryptosporidium & Helicobacter mustelae proteomics studies.  His research highlights the importance of protozoa protecting Campylobacter in water and was  recently cited by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Prior to taking up his current position Bill spent some time at Randox where he was employed as a Senior Scientist responsible for the R&D of diagnostic immunoassays to detect drugs of abuse. He was also employed as a Virology Researcher (Rhinovirus) at Queen’s University, and a Data Manager in the Northern Ireland Cancer Trials Network at Belfast City Hospital.

In Jan-2018, Bill joined NICHE as a Research Associate (microbiology) for the SAFEWATER project funded by the Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF) Research Councils UK Collective Fund.  His scientific papers have been published in top ranked journals.  Since 2006, he is an associate editor for the Journal of Infection in Developing Countries. Bill is a grant & abstract reviewer for the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases.
