Biography

Venkat Iyer is a Senior Lecturer whose teaching and research interests lie in the area of Media Law, Constitutional & Administrative Law, and Business Law.  He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, and teaches at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.  He is also a qualified barrister.After acquiring his BSc (Hons) and LLB degrees, Venkat obtained two LLM degrees in Constitutional & Administrative Law and International Human Rights Law respectively.  He also completed doctoral studies from Queen’s University of Belfast where he started his academic career on a research project involving the study of States of Emergency.  In 1990 Venkat was nominated to a Nuffield Press Fellowship at Wolfson College, Cambridge, UK.Venkat has lectured in several foreign universities, including Meiji University (Japan), University of Melbourne (Australia), Tsinghua University (China), University of Malaya (Malaysia) and Soochow University (Taiwan).  He has acted as a consultant to a number of governments, private corporations and non-governmental organisations. In 2007 he was asked by the World Bank to design a programme of Continuing Legal Education for the Kenyan Bar. He has also designed and delivered capacity-building courses for judges and magistrates in various jurisdictions.Between 2008-15 Venkat served as Law Commissioner for Northern Ireland.  He sits on the Council of the Commonwealth Lawyers’ Association, and edits two journals, The Commonwealth Lawyer and The Round Table: Commonwealth Journal of International Affairs.
