Biography

I am particularly interested in the politics, economy and society of contemporary Southeast Asia, and the Indian Ocean littoral as a dynamic realm of imaginative and creative exchange. I have researched on  international relations in maritime Southeast Asia, Muslim social movements in twentieth century Southeast Asia and the range of encounters between Muslims in differents parts of the world. I have also undertaken research on nationalist movements in the southwest Pacific, Islamic banking, conflict resolution and interfaith dialogue. I was the inaugural recipient of the Mahathir Mohamed Distinguished Fellowship program in 2013, and have undertaken visiting fellowships at the Institute for Ethnic Studies at the National University of Malaysia, the Royal Dutch Institute for Southeast Asian and Caribbean Studies in Leiden and the Islamic State University in Malang (East Java).
