Personal profile

Biography

I am a final-year PhD researcher at Ulster University within NICHE (Nutrition Innovation Centre for Food and Health), investigating the impact of area deprivation on B-vitamin status and cognitive health among older adults as part of the TUDA study. I hold a First-Class Honours degree in Health, Nutrition and Exercise (2022) and a Master’s by Research in Nutrition (2023).

My primary research interests centre on the role of nutrition, particularly B-vitamins such as riboflavin and folate, in supporting brain health, cognitive function, and mental wellbeing.

Alongside my research, I have extensive experience delivering evidence-based nutritional guidance across both clinical and athletic settings. I previously worked within the NHS, delivering an 18-week Type 2 Diabetes programme focused on nutrition, weight management, and physical activity. Concurrently, I was employed at an exercise rehabilitation clinic, leading sessions for individuals living with cancer, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, and cardiovascular conditions. I also have laboratory experience in the measurement of hydration and blood biomarkers as part of a clinical trial. During my Master’s by Research, I served as a nutritionist for a League 1 football club, providing tailored nutrition support to both first-team and academy players to optimise health and performance.

I recently achieved Associate Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (AFHEA), reflecting my commitment to effective teaching and learning in higher education. I also hold qualifications in Good Clinical Practice, Level 3 Personal Training, Level 2 Gym Instruction, and Working with Long-Term Conditions. Additionally, I am a Registered Associate Nutritionist (ANutr) with the Association for Nutrition (AfN).

I have presented my research at several national and international conferences, including:
- Nutrition Society Summer Conference, Dublin (2025)
- Nutrition Society Postgraduate Conferences, Athlone (2024) and Belfast (2025)
- Homocysteine & One-Carbon Metabolism (HCY) Conference, Nancy, France (2025)
