Biography

Shane Porter is a Ceramic Designer and Lecturer in Design (Product) at Belfast School of Art. Shane graduated from the Royal College of Art with MA Ceramics & Glass (2015), Postgraduate Certificate in Further Education (Ulster University, 2021) and BA (Hons) Fine and Applied Art (Ulster University, 2010). He teaches across BA (Hons) Product Design at Belfast School of Art and is a module co-ordinator for Year 2.

Shane is Chair of Applied Art Northern Ireland and Co-chair of Applied Art Ireland. Applied Art Northern Ireland aims to promote, encourage and invigorate contemporary applied art and design practice across the island of Ireland via a series of Master Class lectures and workshops by contemporary international artists and designers with an international, innovative reputation and exhibition profile. The masterclass programme is aimed at artists, designers and learners in secondary and tertiary education.

Shane is a member of the National Association of Ceramics in Education and in 2021 he was a selection panellist for the British Ceramics Biennial’s Fresh award.

Prior to joining the Belfast School of Art, Shane held academic positions at Belfast Metropolitan College and Hampstead School of Art as Lecturer in Ceramics. Shane worked as Artist in Residence assistant and Ceramics technician as part of the Victoria and Albert Museum’s ceramics Artist in Residence scheme from 2012-2015.

Shane has works in numerous private collections, most notably the collection of the Arts Council of Northern Ireland.
