Dr Selim Bozkurt is a Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering in the School of Engineering at Ulster University, where he leads research in biomedical engineering, computational biomechanics, digital twins for healthcare, and the design and evaluation of implantable medical devices. His research integrates engineering, computational modelling, artificial intelligence, and clinical science to develop innovative technologies that support medical device development, optimise surgical planning, and improve patient-specific clinical decision-making.
Before joining Ulster University in 2021, Dr Bozkurt held postdoctoral research positions at University College London (UCL) within the Institute of Cardiovascular Science and the Department of Mechanical Engineering, as well as an honorary research position at the Craniofacial Unit of Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children. During this period, he contributed to multidisciplinary research programmes focused on cardiovascular devices and computational surgical planning. His work included the development of personalised nitinol implantable devices for congenital diseases, funded by the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), and the design, computational analysis and experimental evaluation of a novel transcatheter mitral valve supported by the British Heart Foundation (BHF). Earlier in his career, he was a research assistant at Eindhoven University of Technology as part of the Marie Curie Initial Training Network "Medical Devices Design in Cardiovascular Applications (MeDDiCA)", where he investigated cardiovascular device design and physiological modelling. He previously worked at Yeditepe University in Turkey on the design, analysis and prototype development of an implantable rotary blood pump funded by the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TÜBİTAK).
Dr Bozkurt obtained his PhD in Biomedical Engineering from Eindhoven University of Technology, the Netherlands, where his doctoral research focused on cardiovascular physiology and left ventricular assist devices through computational and experimental modelling. He also holds an MSc in Mechanical Engineering from Yeditepe University and a BSc in Mechanical Engineering from Eskişehir Osmangazi University.
His research centres on computational modelling of physiological systems, cardiovascular biomechanics, digital twins, finite element analysis, computational fluid dynamics, medical device design, computational modelling of craniosynostosis correction and patient-specific simulation. A major focus of his work is developing computational frameworks that enable virtual evaluation of clinical interventions before implementation, reducing development costs and supporting safer, more effective healthcare technologies.
He currently supervises doctoral research in areas including digital twins for craniofacial surgery, computational cardiovascular biomechanics and optimisation of implantable medical devices. He has also supervised numerous master's and undergraduate research projects and is committed to developing the next generation of biomedical engineers through research-led teaching and interdisciplinary collaboration.
Alongside his research activities, Dr Bozkurt serves as Associate Editor for Physical and Engineering Sciences in Medicine and Digital Twins and Applications. He has reviewed research proposals for organisations including the Wellcome Trust, the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO), and the Rosetrees Trust, and regularly reviews manuscripts for a wide range of leading international journals in biomedical engineering, cardiovascular science, and computational medicine. He has also served on the Technical Programme Committee of the International Conference on Biomedical Engineering and Biotechnology and is actively involved in the UKRI Digital Twinning Network Plus.
Dr Bozkurt presents his research through invited lectures, keynote presentations, and international conferences. His work has received international recognition through awards for research excellence and editorial contributions.
