Research activity per year
Sally completed her DPhil in 1994 and after four years in a research role was appointed to a lectureship in the School of Geography and Environmental Sciences. She has been Course Director for the Masters in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) since it began in 1999. Her teaching and research interests focus on the science, technology and application of GIS and geographic methodologies, with emphasis on the use of GIS to map, model and undertake spatial and statistical analysis and modelling of social, environmental and health impacts. These have been applied within University-funded projects such as widening access and spatial analysis of university data as well as to externally funded research. She is also involved in various outreach activities including encouraging and facilitating uptake of GIS within secondary education, and has represented Higher Education on a number of GI industry-related groups including the AGI(NI) committee. She was awarded Ulster University’s Distinguished Teaching Fellowship (team award) in 2009 and in 2015, is a recipient of the Digital Earth GIS Centre of Excellence award and winner of the Association of Geographical Information Education Award in 2015, together with colleagues in Geography and Education.
