Biography

Dr Patrick SM Dunlop is a Senior Lecturer within the School of Engineering and a member of the Engineering Research Institute at Ulster University. He is a Chartered Biologist with a strong academic background in applied science.  His research interests focus on 1) the design and application of nanomaterials for the disinfection of air, water/wastewater, 2) the production of self-cleaning and self-disinfecting medical devices/surfaces; 3) development of biological sensing technology, including rapid identification of organisms associated with antimicrobial resistance. Patrick has ongoing collaborative research with a range of leading Universities and Research Institutes through funding from ERSRC, GCRF, EU FP & Horizon programmes, the US-Ireland R&D Partnership (DELNI/SFI/NSF), US EPA, Royal Society, British Council, NATO and Invest NI - with extensive industrial collboaration developing a range of products and services.  Patrick attained a BSc in Applied Biochemical Sciences (1st Class Hons) in 1997 and a PhD in 2001 both from Ulster University.  He a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, a member of the Judging Panel for the NESTA £10M Longitude Prize, Chairman of the Northern Ireland Antimicrobial Resistance Network, a chartered member of the Society of Biology serving a number of roles on the Northern Ireland Committee over the past 10 years.  Patrick was awarded the Ulster University Distinguished Research Fellowship Champion Award in 2019.
