Orla is a lecturer in applied psychology, and a BPS accredited psychological wellbeing practitioner(PWP), Her doctoral research focused on evaluating the effectiveness of low-intensity cognitive behavioural therapy (PWP service) for mild to moderate mental health difficulties in Northern Ireland. Results of this evalution have been peer reviewed and published. Orla has also carried out and published research relating to the prevalence of medically unexplained symptoms, and has recently completed a systematic review in this area which has been published as a book chapter. Orla is also interested in qualitative research methods, and has carried out work in relation to the effectiveness of health services and the effects of suicide bereavement. Orla has presented at several conferences and was awarded the NIBPS postgraduate prize in 2016 in relation to her work on suicide bereavement. In relation to teaching, Orla is a fellow of the HEA. She teaches on the MSc applied psychology and psychological therapies, and provides clinical supervision to trainee PWPs. She also teaches clinical and counselling psychology to undergraduates.
