Biography
Orla Kerrigan is a PhD researcher at Ulster University within the School of Applied Social and Policy Sciences. Building on her academic foundation in Criminology and Criminal Justice, having earned a BSc in 2022 and an MSc in 2023 from Ulster University, her doctoral research, titled “The Unspoken Conflict? The Impact and Legacy of Sexual Violence during the Northern Irish Troubles,” is an in-depth study of Conflict-Related Gender-Based Violence (CRGBV) during the Troubles (1969–1998) and its long-term impacts on survivors and communities. This research uniquely examines both state and non-state perpetrators, challenges dominant conceptualisations of CRGBV, and interrogates Northern Ireland’s framing as ‘post-conflict.’ Through qualitative methods and survivor-centered interviews, Orla’s work seeks to illuminate the prevalence and consequences of CRGBV, explore victims’ needs for justice and redress, and inform policy recommendations to address this legacy.
