Biography

Prof. Nigel Irwin holds a BSc Hons in Biomedical Sciences from Ulster University (2001) and a PhD in Experimental Therapeutics for Diabetes also from Ulster (2004). He also has a Diploma in Industrial Studies (2001) and is a Fellow of HEA (2008) as well as being a Research Assistant in Electrophysiology at University of Nevada (2000-2001). Nigel began his career at Ulster as a Research Associate (2004-2007) and a Research Fellow (2007-2009) in Diabetes. He then became a Lecturer in Pharmacology (2009-2014) before being promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2014 and Professor in 2020. He has over 15 years experience in diabetes research with specfic expertise in exploitation of gut-derived peptides for the treatment of diabetes and related disorders. Nigel has published over 150 peer-reviewed publications (h-index 32), presented at numerous national/international conferences and attracted significant external research funding. He is holder of several families of patents for the use of peptide analogues in diabetes-obesity therapy and is the recipient of research awards, and is a member of healthcare science advisory boards as well as engaging in consultant activity. Nigel is a member of several professional societies/committees and has had editorial roles for various respected Journals. Research Interests include: New perspectives on gut peptides for the treatment of diabetes; Synthesis and evaluation of stable gut-derived peptides and hybrid peptides; Pharmacological characterisation of current and novel anti diabetic drugs; Role of incretins in bone strength and quality. Teaching Interests: Pharmacology; Immunology; Biomolecular Therapeutics; Clinical Therapeutics; Drug Discovery; Pharmaceutical Biotechnology; Evidence-based Practice. Administrative Roles: Module Co-ordinator for Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics, Cardiovascular, Endocrinal, Renal, Nutrition and Blood, Central Nervous System; Assisstant Diabetes Research Group leader; Senior Radiation Protection Supervisor
