Dr Muhammad Abid is a Chartered Mechanical Engineer (CEng MIMechE) and Fellow of Advance HE (FHEA), currently serving as a Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering at Ulster University. With over 15 years of academic and research experience across the UK and the Middle East, he brings a rich, global perspective to engineering education and sustainable energy innovation. His research expertise centres on applied thermodynamics, heat pump systems, energy efficiency, and decarbonised heating and cooling technologies. He holds a PhD in Applied Thermodynamics from Ulster University and has made contributions to research in climate change and sustainability. Before joining Ulster University, he served as a Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Liverpool, where he contributed to curriculum development, postgraduate supervision, and sustainability-focused teaching and research.
Dr Abid is the Degree Apprenticeship Course Director at Ulster’s School of Computing, Engineering and Intelligent Systems. In this role, he leads the strategic development, academic coordination, and industry engagement necessary to deliver high-quality, work-based learning experiences. His efforts support professional growth, workforce development, and the wider institutional mission to align education with evolving industry needs.
Dr Abid delivers undergraduate and postgraduate teaching with a focus on applied learning, inclusive curriculum design, and embedding Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). His teaching philosophy is grounded in real-world relevance, empowering students to become sustainability-minded engineers capable of driving meaningful change. To enhance his academic practice, Dr Abid has recently completed the Postgraduate Diploma in Academic Practice (PGDAP) at the University of Liverpool. He is also an active Climate STEM Ambassador and an engaged member of the IMechE’s Energy, Environment and Sustainability Group (EESG) Board, contributing to sector-wide conversations on sustainability and climate action.
