Biography

Dr Mary McCann graduated from Ulster University with a BSc Hons Human Nutrition, a Masters of Research and PhD in Nutrition. Mary currently holds the position of Faculty Partnership Manager in Life and Health Sciences and Lecturer in Human Nutrition within NICHE at Ulster University.

Mary is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA) and has held the role of Course Director on the BSc Hons Food and Nutrition programme for >6 years alongside teaching across the suite of MSc and BSc Nutrition and Dietetics programmes at Ulster. Her teaching specialisms include the assessment of nutritional status, nutritional controversies, health promotion and nutrition through the lifecycle and clinical biochemistry.

Mary is a Registered Nutritionist (RNutr) and her high impact research at NICHE is in the area of maternal nutrition with a focus on maternal overweight and obesity, nutrient requirements in pregnancy, specifically iron and vitamin D requirements.  Her research also examines gestational weight gain and body composition during pregnancy, the impact of food portion size on food and energy intake and the influence of nutrition labelling on food intake and behaviour.

Mary is a member of The Nutrition Society and has held the positions of Treasurer and Ordinary member, Irish Section. Mary is an Editorial Board Member of Proceeding of the Nutrition Society (Impact Factor 6.391), and is External Examiner at a number of UK and International Higher Education Institutions.
