Research Interests

Dr Buck is a member of the Research on Property and Planning (RPP) centre within the Built Environment Research Institute at Ulster University.

His research interests focus on the interactions between individuals and the natural and built environment, exploring how different forms of Planning can mediate these interactions. His work sits at the nexus of Planning, Environmental Sciences and Human Behaviour, facilitating an interdisciplinary approach to my research and teaching.

His key research interests include:

  • the interplay between environmental planning (e.g. climate resilience planning) and wider spatial planning.
  • planning for coastal change, including addressing the effects of coastal flooding and erosion and the interplay between these risks and socio-economic challenges in coastal communities.
  • active travel and the strategies, policies, and infrastructures to support a modal shift towards sustainable transportation.
  • land value capture, and the use of such financial instruments to support the delivery of the range of public and environmental goods.

Teaching Interests

My teaching spans across several areas, and draws from my research experience including Spatial Planning and Practice, Marine and Coastal Planning and Research Methods.
