Title of Project: Building Gender-Just Citizenship in Northern Ireland: Women’s Political Participation and Transversal Politics in a Deeply Divided Society

Submission Date: November 2020

Project Description: This doctoral project is positioned at the intersection of three research areas: (1) gender norms of citizenship and participation in public, political life; (2) nationalism and ethno-national conflict as gendered phenomena; and (3) cross-community work for gender-equal citizenship in transitional societies. The thesis analyses post-Agreement Northern Ireland by linking gendered discourses of ethno-nationalism and citizenship to women’s participation in public life, as well as to possibilities for and obstructions to equal citizenship. It explores how transversal politics in women’s cross-community work can enable a re-imagining of what gender-equitable and democratic participation can look like in deeply divided transitional societies.
