Biography

Liam McComish is a Senior Lecturer in graphic and advertising design at Ulster University. Following a professional career during the 1980s and 1990s working for Remus Uomo, British Coal, Consumer Council, Scottish Curriculum Council and BBC among others, he began lecturing in 2000.He researches in the area of typographic communication—the construction and communication of meaning through graphical/typographical means in physical, digital and other locations; semantic and semiotic intentions in designed communication and the corresponding perceptions of users/audiences; the relationship between graphic design and notions of identity and commercial and cultural discourse through field, archival and practice research.He has given research papers at Nordic Design Conference (Copenhagen), Design&Emotion Conference (Gothenburg), Association Typographique Internationale Conference (Dublin) and FaceForward Typography Conference, (Dublin). Publications in graphic design pedagogy include LesEnfonts and Machine for Experiential Urban Learning.Liam has been external examiner for Bolton University BA Graphic Design and BA Animation and Illustration, MA Design Master’s Theses at IADT Dublin and co supervised two successful PhD students. He is a member and international assessor for the International Society of Typographic Designers and Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
