Thesis Title: Assisting people with intellectual disability to self-manage healthy lifestyle choices.
This research involved a series of focus group discussions with adults with intellectual disabilties to inform the design of a specific weight management programme called "The HealthTaps Programme". "The HealthyTaps Programme" evolved into a series of health promotion education sessions, followed by a multi-component weight management intervention that utilises bespoke mobile app technology, the HealthyTaps app, to support self-management of diet and exercise for people with an intellectual disability. Pilot results demonstrate weight losses in excess of standards set for effective weight management interventions with the general population (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence, 2014).
