Biography
Dr. Laura Aguiar is a multimedia producer and lecturer on the BSc. Cinematic Arts and MA Film & TV Production courses.
As a producer, she has developed a diverse portfolio spanning documentary films, virtual reality, interactive websites, and exhibitions.
Her research and creative work focus on bringing people together through participatory filmmaking, archives, and community storytelling.
She is particularly interested in making history, art, and heritage more accessible, and in the positive impact that participatory media can have on individuals, organisations, and society across various levels, including mental health, skills development and community relations.
Laura is the co-founder and director of the Rathmullan Film Festival, a participatory film festival based in a rural village in county Donegal, northwest of Ireland. By actively involving locals of all ages in film programming, event management and filmmaking projects, Laura has helped the festival grow since its first edition in 2018.
She holds a BA in Journalism (Fumec University), MA in Media and Communication (Stockholm University), a PhD in Film Studies (Queen’s University Belfast), and HEA Associate Fellow.
