Biography

Kirsty Comac is a PhD Researcher in English at the University Of Ulster. Her PhD thesis explores the theme of absence in lesbian historical fiction, and why the genre deploys historiographical metaphors of filth, dirt, and contagion to explore the marginalising tendencies of cultural memory. She has presented her research at the 2026 Festival of PhD Research, and has published in the upcoming volume of The Paperclip. 

 

 

Research Interests

Kirsty's current research interests are lesbian literature, historical fiction, memory studies, and lesbian literary theory. 

 

Current and Recent Grants

Kirsty's PhD project was generously funded by a grant from the Department For The Economy (DfE), 2022 - 2025.

Teaching Interests

Kirsty has been a seminar facilitator for ENG102 ('Theory And Other Monsters') as part of the BA English degree from 2023 - 2025. The module introduced undergraduate students to the fundamentals of theory including feminist, queer, Marxist, and psychoanalytic, and their application to texts and poetry. She also introduced students to the practice of academic writing, in addition to the ethical use of AI to support their learning rather than replace it entirely.
