PhD Research Abstract

Through the use of internet radio broadcasting, I am proposing that the nature of internet radio allows for the collaborative curation of a unique community’s intangible facets of heritage. Digital audio files are inherently documentary insofar as they are representative recordings of what a community decides to broadcast. The operation of a community radio station on Rathlin Island also offers an alternative pathway to express the community’s heritage to a greater audience without the deleterious ecological effects of traditional tourism, while also allowing for the discovery, prioritization, and preservation of new facets of island heritage through creative exploration. Creative industries such as internet radio are well-placed to offer avenues of participatory content design enabling the flourishing of creativity, curation, and conservation. The proposed research hopes to examine whether or not internet radio provides an alternative creative methodology as a more empowering and easier-to-use option for communities when considering their heritage preservation.
